The Story

When you join a safari in East Africa you can expect to photograph male lions. We often photograph lions to the point where my photo tour groups say “we got the photos we wanted what else can we find?” But what you don’t know is that most male lions you encounter don’t make great photographs. Why? This is either because they are too young and their mane hasn’t come in yet or their faces tend to wear ugly scars from territorial battles. They also tend to be active at night and in low light conditions making them challenging to photograph. To compound the issue lions have undergone a catastrophic decline and are on the brink of extinction in all but the largest and best managed national parks in Africa. For those reasons in 2018 I had been on close to a dozen safaris in search of the “the one” male lion image I had been dreaming of. I wanted him to be mature, proud, and symbolize courage, power, and strength. One early morning on safari in Kenya I found him. As we slowly approached in the land cruiser to within 20 feet I’ll never forget how he stared directly into my eyes as my heart pounded. And then as he gazed out over the domain painted in that magical African golden hour light, I took this image. For me it was perfect moment and a photo worthy of representing this iconic species.
